The Infrastructure Gap

Cambridge Ahead’s infrastructure gap project brings together national experts, Cambridge Ahead members, and stakeholders across the system to find solutions that will unlock Cambridge’s full potential – for local and national benefit.

This project will involve a series of expert hearings and roundtables, as well as the publication of new data and evidence, all intended to support Government and Local Authorities in their statutory roles shaping the exciting next chapter for the Cambridge city region.

As part of our ongoing efforts to address the Infrastructure Gap, we have conducted two pivotal studies.

Firstly, our Cambridge Ahead Pulse Survey captures insights from leading Cambridge employers, providing a comprehensive assessment of the value they place on maintaining a Cambridge presence, alongside the challenges they face in doing so.

Additionally, our Cambridge Futures Modelling which examines the current pressures on housing and transport in the Greater Cambridge region. This study highlights the significant impact these pressures have on both the local area and the broader UK economy.

Both of these documents are integral to our work and provide valuable data to inform our strategies and actions in supporting sustainable growth and development in the region.

Four infrastructure elements will be explored in this first phase of activity:

  • Transport & Connectivity
  • Social Infrastructure
  • Water
  • Energy & Sustainability

Leading and advising aspects of this work from Cambridge Ahead are Dame Kate Barker, Dame Diane Coyle, Prof Aled Jones, Dr David Cleevely CBE and others.

This series of events, reports and hearings will also produce and provide analysis that aims to deepen Government’s understanding of the case for Cambridge.
