How should Cambridge grow in the decades ahead?

As Cambridge continues to evolve as a leading centre of innovation and research, questions about housing, transport, infrastructure, governance and access to opportunity are becoming increasingly important.

Produced during a placement with Cambridge Ahead, this report by Margaret Ogachi explores how Cambridge’s growth is increasingly taking shape through a network of connected employment centres, innovation clusters and new communities, rather than a single dominant urban core.

Drawing on academic research, policy analysis and interviews with experts from across planning, infrastructure, business, academia and local government, the report examines the opportunities and challenges associated with this emerging pattern of development. It considers how place-based policy and spatial planning can help support sustainable growth while ensuring the benefits are shared across the city region.

The report concludes with recommendations focused on infrastructure, social equity, governance and the relationship between spatial planning and innovation.
